chapter fifteen

Pollie explodes into my bedroom the next afternoon. “I require you!” she exclaims.

“Who’s that?” Rosie giggles from the phone in my hand. She and Blanche are video chatting with me from the shop.

Pollie hops up on my bed beside me. Her splotchy bleached jeans look like they were painted on and her white top hugs her in all the right places. She pushes her black curls away from her face before waving to my friends. “Hello, friends of Chicky!” she says excitedly, pushing the sleeves of her leather jacket up her arms. Her makeup is more dramatic today than I’m used to, with smoky eyes and red lips. She’s like a cheery biker.

Both sets of eyes on the other side of the phone widen at the screen before Rosie exclaims, “Did you replace me?” Her voice squeaks and pinches in a way I have never heard. It’s anger. It’s jealousy. It’s incredibly un-Rosie.

“I think she replaced me, too!” Blanche whines.

Pollie casts me a sideways glance but doesn’t move. I doubt anyone actually intimidates her. I look her up and down for a moment, trying to figure out what my wack-a-doodle friends are seeing. Pollie’s black hair and olive complexion do remind me a bit of Blanche, but I have to say that her loud and out there personality and style are all Rosie, right down to the red lips.

“Okay, Captains of Rudeness,” I begin, “This is Pollie. She’s Conrad’s sister and she’s not replacing anyone. I am allowed to have friends outside of you guys, you know that, right?”

“No you’re not,” Rosie harrumphs, slouching further against the wall. I don’t grump when she spends more time with Goldie than with me. What a baby.

Blanche, the far more reasonable of the two, shakes her head at her toddler counterpart and waves back to us. “Hi, Pollie, I’m Blanche and the sourpuss here is Rosie”

“Oh!” Pollie exclaims, her hands clapping together. “Is this the darling little pie shop you were telling me about?”

Rosie’s eyebrows arch up to her hairline and I can see Blanche ripping her lip with her teeth trying not to laugh. “Yes, and it is utterly darling,” she says with a devilish grin, her arm motioning to the kitchen in which they sit. “Nothing but flour and the smell of fruit filling here.”

“You say that like it’s a bad thing,” Rosie says defensively. She’s in a foul mood.

“You guys are nuts. I’m going to hop off. I’ll see you in a few days.”

“Bye Bella, love you!” Rosie exclaims as she clicks off the call before Blanche can say anything.

“I like your friends, even if they were making fun of me,” Pollie laughs, more self-aware than I was hoping. I wanted to explain that they weren’t truly making fun of her. It’s their way. In fact, poking fun means they like you.

“I can see the panic on your face,” she begins, giggles growing as she covers her mouth with her hand. “It’s all good. I like ladies with some sass.
